The Founder of Rotary
Paul Percival Harris
19 April, 1868-27 January, 1947

Paul Percival Harris the founder of Rotary was born in Racine. Wisconsin, USA on 19th April 1868. Paul was the second of six children to Georege N. Harris. A man with varied knowledge and experience, he received bachelor of Physical Culture and an honorary LLD degree from the University of Venmont and LLD from the University of Love.

Paul Harris was the first President of the National Association of Rotary Club (in 1910) and also of the international Association of Rotary Clubs (the name lster changed to Rotary international) in the year 1912. Paul was active in Rotary until his death on January 1947. Today the seed he sowed in 1905 has blossomed into a large tree covering 154 countries and geographical regions with 27,967 clubs having a membership of mearly 1.18 million Rotarians worldwide.


What is Rotary?

 Rotary is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.

 Rotary is the world’s first service club. The first Rotary club was founded in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 23 February 1905.

 Rotary is some 1.2 million service-minded men and women belonging to more then 18,000 Rotary clubs in virtually every nation in the world.

 Rotarian meets weekly for fellowship and interesting and informative programs dealing with topics of local and global importance. Membership reflects a wide cross-section of community representation,

 Rotarian plan and carry out a remarkable variety of humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs that touch people’s lives in their local communities and our world community.

 Rotary is the Rotary Foundation, which each year provides some US$ 90-million for international scholarship, cultural exchange, and humanitarian projects large and small that improve the quality of life million of people. Rotary is widely regarded as the world” largest provider of international education scholarship.

 Rotary is Polio Plus, Rotary’s Commitment to work with national and international health organizations on the goal of polio eradication by the year 2005, Rotary’s 100th anniversary, More than one billion children in the developing nations with have been immunized against polio through Polio Plus grants.
